Ice dams are one of the most common winter roof problems in the Cedar Valley. A few hours of fall prep can keep meltwater from backing up under your shingles in January.
Heat from the house warms the upper roof and melts snow. The water runs down to the cold eaves and refreezes, building a ridge of ice. More meltwater pools behind it and works its way under the shingles. Waterloo's long stretches of below-freezing weather, broken by sunny thaws, make this cycle common.
Do not chip at the ice with a hammer or shovel; it is easy to tear shingles. A roof rake used from the ground to pull snow off the bottom few feet helps. For a dam that is already leaking, a pro can steam it off safely. Then plan a fix for the root cause, usually insulation, air sealing, or ventilation, plus ice-and-water shield at the eaves on your next reroof.
